Established in 2002 as an experimental artistic platform in Accra, Ghana, and officially registered as a nonprofit in 2006, AIA was founded by Samuel Olou, a visual artist, with the late Professor Joe Nkrumah, former conservator of the Ghana National Museum, serving as an advisor. AIA's inaugural achievement was organizing the first international artistic workshop and symposium during "la Semaine de la Francophonie" in Accra, Ghana.
