The purpose of the Thamgidi Fund is to support international cross- cultural exchange and strengthen the work of cultural operators from the African continent. Initiated by Sithabile Mlotshwa – the Thamgidi Fund was formed due to her concern of the lack of funding structures within the African continent and the detrimental impact dependency on western funding has on development and intellectual activity in the African continent. Her biggest concern was and still is the loss of cultural resources and cultural heritage vital for the development of the African continent as a whole.
For Mlotshwa development in the African continent is greatly affected by the neglect to protect and preserve cultural production and because of the vaccum created by the plundered cultural heritage. This vaccum strongly fuels the lack of self-awareness, self worth and the inability to recognise the abundance in wealth and potential for the development of the African continent as a whole.
This fund was thus created not only to enable creators but to also inspire a different way of thinking amongst African people.
